- Abstract
The number of orthodontic tooth correction has continuously increased over the last decades, and has expanded to adults. With their cumulative dental history, the need for interdisciplinary assessment and therapy increases. In this context, the assessment of the condition of the pulp and periapical tissues as well as the judgment of already root filled teeth and their restorations is important. The pulp is a highly differentiated and immunocompetent tissue with good healing capacity and adaptive properties. However, its small size and the hard tissue shell set biological boundaries. Microbial, mechanical, traumatic and chemical stimuli can jeopardize pulp vitality. If not treated, a pulp necrosis leads sooner or later to an infection of the whole root canal system. Therefore, endodontic diagnostics focus on the assessment of the pulp vitality and the chance of pulpal survival. This paper highlights the aim of the endodontic therapy and discusses diagnostics and their associated difficulties. Relationships between orthodontic and endodontic therapy and frequently occurring clinical situations involving both orthodontics and endodontics are presented.
