- Abstract
The article discusses the human need for belonging in students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), focusing on techniques used by the United Methodist Family Services' Charterhouse School in Richmond, Virginia. The school's Circle of Courage and direct instruction educational programs are discussed, which encourage the interpersonal interactions of students. The author reports that ASD students tend to focus on objects rather than people, and have difficulty understanding social interactions, known as the Theory of the Mind (ToM).
