- Abstract
The Institute of Certified Financial Planners and the International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners. Inc (IBCTP) have the most rigorous Code of Ethics in the profession. That exception is that as the professional membership organization for Certified Financial Planner registrants, the Institute reserved the right to require its members to adhere to "practical interpretations" that would provide guidance in interpreting the Code. Although adherence to the Code is mandatory for institute members, there is a measure of flexibility depending upon the nature of the CFP member's professional activities and the scope of the client engagement. Requirements similar to a stockbroker apply to her work as a life and health insurance agent; however, instead of complying with federal and state securities laws, she must comply with stare insurance laws. The client also has a disclosure responsibility, and it is covered in the Code. The member is urged to enter into a client relationship only after securing sufficient in Formation to satisfy the member that the relationship is warranted by the author. individual's needs and objectives, and that the member has no personal reservations concerning the professional services to be provided.
