- Title
BIAS IN SOCIAL MOVEMENT THEORY: A VIEW FROM A FEMALE-SYSTEMS PERSPECTIVE.
- Authors
Edson, Belle A.
- Abstract
The author states his case: "In this essay, I propose to begin to question our approaches to the study of social movements in speech communication in an attempt to discover if a sex bias exists and if so, its implications for our research. I will propose some distinctions between the male and the female reality, show how a male perspective is assumed in traditional studies of social movements, and then suggest a female-systems rather than a male-systems perspective on movements. Certainly, the next step in this investigation needs to be an application and a testing of these notions in actual studies of movements, but that will not be my purpose here. I simply intend to raise the issue of sex bias in our theories about movements, to propose a female-systems perspective on them, and to begin to speculate on the possible consequences of such bias.
