"His Child...Must Not Be Born": Revising Erika in Samuel Barber's Vanessa.
- Authors
Poxon, Stephanie
- Abstract
The article presents the author's view regarding the opera "Vanessa," composed by composer Samuel Barber. He states that even though Barber asserted that the opera was the champion of his opera, critics of its premiere in 1958 argued that the distinction belonged instead to Erika. He cites that the plot focuses on the love triangle between the lady of the manor Vanessa, Anatol the suitor of 20 years Vanessa's junior and Erika, the young niece of Vanessa.
