- Abstract
The article presents a brief analysis of the history of Afghanistan. The country was once a part of India. In ancient period, the country was the center through which World trade converged and diverged. In the latter part of the fifteenth century A.D., this era in world commerce was suddenly brought to an end with the invention of navigation aids such as compass, which made sea voyages possible. This was a great blow to the economy of the country. Conquerors like Genghis Khan further aggravated the problem by destroying the irrigation system in retaliation for the resistance of the people to his invasion. Vast areas of fertile lands that were once made highly productive by irrigation were later reduced to barren lands. The fate of modern Afghans is largely dependent on these factors. Chronic malnutrition, illiteracy, to name only a few, have become a cause of concern for the country. Now, the good thing is that many of young Afghans are seeking higher education. Further, the government of Afghanistan is also seeking technical aids and assistance from developed countries to bolster its trade and commerce.
