The article analyzes the problems and pitfalls of the pacific loon. Although there is only one accepted record of pacific loons in Connecticut, the study asserts that they are most likely being overlooked and misidentified. Critical factors in this matter are presented, and includes the size and shape of the bird's body, head and bill, its chin and vent straps and the varying field conditions in which they are viewed. The differences between the pacific and arctic loon are also discussed.
