- Abstract
Dental caries is the most common communicable disease globally, affecting an estimated 2 billion people. The prevalence and severity of the disease are associated with social status, with Northern European countries having lower rates compared to Southern and Eastern European countries. Dental Public Health takes a population approach to care delivery, while General Dental Practice focuses on individual care. Prevention of dental caries is categorized as primary, secondary, and tertiary, with primary prevention being the most upstream approach. There is a need for ongoing efforts to improve oral health, particularly in high-risk populations, and evidence-based approaches such as the Common Risk approach and behavioral interventions are recommended. The role of general dental practitioners is crucial in promoting oral health and preventing dental caries.
