- Title
EMPTY PARENTHESES AND BOWED LEGS IN WEBSTER AND DEKKER.
- Authors
JACKSON, MACDONALD P.
- Abstract
The article investigates the use of empty parentheses or brackets in the 1607 play "Northward Ho" by John Webster and Thomas Dekker. Topics discussed include the scholar Fredson Bowers asserting that the empty brackets pertain to a movement of the legs imitating the bow-legged walk of a man with venereal disease, the argument presented by fellow scholar Cyrus Hoy to discredit Bowers' claim and the common use of empty brackets in the 16th and 17th centuries to denote illegible entries in plays.
