- Abstract
This essay explores how the 1303 Old Swedish "Herr Ivan," a translation of Chrétien de Troyes' "Yvain, ou le Chevalier au Lion, redraws the King Arthur of Chrétien's masterpiece. Topics discussed include the central thematic features of the Old Swedish text and how King Arthur as depicted in the text became the benchmark againt whom other kings and rulers are judged. Also discussed is the invocation of Charlemagne by the poet of "Her Ivan" as a mirror-personage to his Arthur.
