- Abstract
The article analyzes the characters of the forest family in the first section of the Gautreks saga, Gauta páttr or "Gauti's Tale." It interprets the text, through its presentation of these characters and situation, that leaves some space for sympathy or even identification to develop between members of the family and its contemporary Icelandic audience. It seeks to take into account a range of intertextual, intratextual and contextual factors and connections. It also offers some basic information about the saga and summarizes the content of the páttr.
