- Abstract
The article discusses several programming ideas for children's libraries or for children's services in public libraries to increase literacy among disadvantaged children, in response to several grant submissions to a review committee for the the 2012 Light the Way: Library Outreach to the Underserved grant competition. Topics include grant submissions that proposed programs to serve teenage parents and their children and which focused on early literacy development with storytime exercises and exercises that facilitated children's interactions with literacy materials. Also discussed are programs for deaf children using sign language, as well as strategies for public libraries to submit successful grant applications with clear goals and data to support library- or community-related need.
