- Abstract
Over the decades, the method of performing a cesarean section has been changed and improved, and many doctors have been involved in the process. One of them was a German surgeon Max Sanger. In 1882, he published a paper in which he presented the possibility of performing a cesarean section without a hysterectomy, provided that the uterine wound was carefully sutured using double sutures. What is considered to be a standard nowadays, was an innovation then. The method proposed by Sanger proved to be a success, both maternal and infant mortality rates were lower than during operations performed using other methods. Sanger's operation quickly became popular worldwide and, both the method and he himself, changed the history of obstetrics forever.
