- Abstract
The article reports on Johann von Mikulicz-Radecki, a great surgeon, who died about 100 years ago on 14 June 1905. His legacy is an academic lineage, a surgical tree on each branch of which hangs the name of one of his disciples. Born in 1850 in Czernowitz in northern Poland, Mikulicz was the son of a famous architect. Mikulicz graduated from the Gymnasium in his home town and enrolled at Vienna University Medical School and, subsequently, worked in the surgical department of Th. Billroth. In 1880 he obtained a surgical professorship through his study of "Die seitlichen Verkümmerungen am Knie und deren Heilungsmethoden."
