- Abstract
Polypharmacy in the elderly population is a reality that can only be avoided by taking care of their health at a young age. The Brazilian population is increasingly aging with health problems, as a result of poor diet, sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy habits. What precedes polypharmacy are the factors that trigger illness in the elderly, given that this population is at greater risk of contracting a variety of illnesses, including mental disorders and especially depression. This study aims to identify the impact of polymedication on the quality of life of the elderly. This is an integrative literature review using the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) and the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO). The search took place between August and October 2023. The results include the selection of 12 studies that have previously addressed the issue of polypharmacy in the elderly population. It can be concluded that the use of five or more medicines at the same time is known as polypharmacy and is very common in the elderly population. This increases the risk of adverse drug reactions, drug interactions and impairment of the individual's quality of life, factors that can have a negative impact on adherence to treatment and worsen health outcomes.
