- Abstract
Anemias are a group of diseases that affect many developed and developing countries, therefore, they are considered a global public health problem, which increases the risk of morbidity and mortality, especially in the groups most susceptible to developing the disease, such as children, pregnant women, women in the fertile period and the elderly. The factors that lead to iron deficiency anemia or iron deficiency anemia may be due to the low consumption of iron-rich foods in daily meals, such as meat in general, dark green vegetables, crustaceans, beans and other legumes, in addition to acute and chronic loss. of blood, increased demand and malabsorption of iron. This is an ecological, retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative approach. Based on the secondary database of the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), on the health information platform (TABNET). In the survey, iron deficiency anemia was selected from the ICD 10 morbidity list (10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases), based on the following variables: year of processing January 2019 to May 2023 (last month with data available in the system); male and female sex; age group < 1 year to > 80 years; North, Northeast, South, Southeast and Midwest regions; color/race black, brown, white, indigenous, yellow. The data gather information regarding the number of hospitalizations due to iron deficiency anemia. The country recorded during the last 4 years, 53,916 hospitalizations caused by iron deficiency anemia. There was a predominance of hospitalizations for iron deficiency anemia in the Southeast region, 41.8% (n=22,539) cases were male and 58.2% (n=31,377) were female. It is concluded that the main factors that contribute to the occurrence of the disease are linked to the interruption of breastfeeding in the first six months of life, socioeconomic issues, blood loss and mainly due to inadequate food consumption.
