- Abstract
Brazil is among the largest producers of cow's milk in the world. The milk production chain is distributed practically throughout the national territory. Although, historically, production has been shown to be dispersed and heterogeneous in the country, it is essential to verify activity concentration indicators in a broad way, on a space-time scale, which may reflect dynamics in the country's dairy chain and ongoing transformations. Given the above, the present study aimed to evaluate the evolution of milk production and productivity in the national territory between the years 2011 and 2021. For the analyzed period, milk production grew by only 10%. However, it should be noted that there was a reduction in the number of cows milked and a 60% increase in productivity, indicating the moment of technological impulse that dairy farming is experiencing. On the other hand, in spatial terms, it was observed that the spatial distribution of milk production has changed in the last ten years. The South continues to be at the forefront of technological innovation in dairy farming, but is now closely followed by other important macro-basins, such as Minas Gerais and the Eastern Northeast. Therefore, there are indications of a technified concentration of dairy production in regions of the national territory, that is, a perspective of territorial competitiveness may be emerging, with labor training, technical assistance and all the services necessary for the development of dairy production.
