- Abstract
Introduction: cancer is a disease caused by a group of cells that multiply uncontrollably and autonomously, invading other tissues locally and remotely; That can lead to death. Objective: to characterize clinically and epidemiologically the malignant diseases in patients belonging to the Raúl Sánchez University Polyclinic in 2018. Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional investigation was carried out, the universe consisted of 105 cancer patients, with the totality being studied. Demographic variables were analyzed; age, sex, and skin color and metastases that could develop. Theoretical, empirical and statistical methods such as percentage and average calculation were applied. Results: 60,9 5% belonged to the female sex, and 67,62 % were older than 60 years. Patients with breast cancer (28,58 %) and prostate cancer (18,10 %) predominated. Bad eating habits were recognized in 89,52 % of patients, as well as sedentary lifestyle (53,33 %) and smoking (51,43 %). The most common signs and symptoms were asthenia (90,48 %), anorexia (83,81 %) and weight loss (76,19 %). 51,43 % of the patients presented some type of metastasis; where the liver was the most common location (48,15 %). Conclusions: patients after the sixth decade of life, with poor eating habits, sedentary lifestyle and smoking are prone to the development of cancer diseases. These conditions present as premonitory signs and symptoms weight loss and asthenia; with development of metastases in locations such as the liver.
