- Title
Rising from the Gutter: Rudolph Block, the Comic Strip, and the Ghetto Stories of Bruno Lessing.
- Authors
Cole, Jean Lee
- Abstract
The article examines the bridge figure role of Rudolph Block, as editor of "New York Journal" and as his pseudonym Bruno Lessing between the world of New York Jewery and the mainstream/Gentile publishing industry. It notes that as Block, he translated the journal's comic section for a multi-ethnic and multilingual culture of the Lower East Side. As Lessing, he translated the multi-ethnic culture of the Lower East Side filtered through his secularized Jewish German American perspective.
