- Title
Charles W. Chesnutt's Stenographic Realism.
- Authors
Sussman, Mark
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the idea that Charles W. Chesnutt's two coinciding practices, stenography and fiction, are more than merely coincidental. Topics discussed include the relationship of manners, mimicry and Chesnutt's novel, "The House behind the Cedars (1900)," the crucial role mimesis played in the racial politics of the nineteenth century, and stenographic realism according to Chesnutt.
