- Abstract
Although Latin American cinema was transnational from its very beginnings, Uruguayan cinema had to wage an internal battle given the scant resources and the hegemonic nationalistic ideology of the first decades of 20th Century. The mid-1940s co-productions with Argentine studios allowed Uruguayan cinematography to improve their own studios, technical teams and films. These co-productions contributed to strengthening the exchange with other countries in the region and in the world, allowing the meager local production to improve through knowledge of and dialogue with other cinematic traditions. This paper focuses on part of that process, bearing in mind that the country's cultural history is largely based on symbolic and personal reciprocity.
