- Abstract
Synthetic materials are made from petrochemical-derived substances and their processing leads to tiny fibres called microplastics. These synthetic textiles are of chemical origin, non-biodegradable which on processing releases plastics that are a threat to marine life. In an era of sustainable production, these microplastic and microfibers are bespoken topics and a matter of great concern. Unfortunately, the majority of the clothing encompasses of synthetic materials like nylon, polyester, and acrylic, which is now seen as a threat not just when they are disposed of, but at the stage of laundry. The contact with water and an agitative force of washing certainly pulls out fibers to leave the textile and enter into the ocean as a pollutant. The article explains the invasion of plastics in human life, the merits and demerits, plastic pollution, microfiber, and sustainable solutions to this menace.
