- Abstract
Malaysian mangroves provide important foraging, roosting and breeding grounds for about 32-112 species of birds, including mangrove specialists and mangrove-adapted species. Mangrove specialists like the Milky Stork are sensitive to ecological changes and can serve as a bio-indicator on the status of the mangroves, nevertheless some mangrove specialists can be rather elusive and often underrepresented in bird diversity surveys. Over the last 40 years of avifauna research, while 73% of studies focussed on bird diversity in mangroves, mangrove bird-habitat interactions are rather unexplored owing to insufficient long-term monitoring data on the ecological interactions and functions, and state of recovery of mangrove birds in rehabilitated mangroves. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to provide better insights and understanding for improved mangrove forest management towards conservation and protection of mangrove birds.
