- Abstract
The importance and aesthetic value of khat/calligraphy in the Islamic world hold a special position among other art forms. Across societies adhering to the Islamic faith, various script styles that constitute khat have maintained their privileged status, albeit with different intensities and variations depending on geography. Therefore, celi thuluth exhibits a unique developmental process in its handling by the Turks. While the aesthetic values of khat scripts are easily appreciated by khattats or individuals with a particular interest in this art, it has often been challenging, sometimes impossible, for those outside the discipline of khat to assess its value. This study does not aim to provide definitive information on how spacing and composition should be adjusted in celi thuluth, but it rather focuses on how spacing and composition balance is achieved, how different khattats exhibit varying and similar approaches, and even how the same khattat may alter spacing and composition in the same phrase written at different times. To attend to this issue, an evaluation of spacing and composition balance is made based on 14 compositions written by nine different khattats derived from the phrase "Gardens of Eden, whereof the gates are opened for them" from the Sad Surah (Chapter 38, Verse 50). Of the 14 compositions, seven were found to be highly successful in terms of spacing and composition. Of the remaining eight compositions, three were of moderate quality, while five were deemed unsuccessful. Deficiencies in spacing were illustrated within the works through certain drawings. As the most important principle defining celi thuluth is the balance between spacing and composition, this study holds significance for khat students and enthusiasts engaged in celi thuluth and for those with a special interest in this art form.
