- Abstract
In chapter three, "The Spectacle of Spectators", Cantoni addresses the way in which new playwrights respond to the unique character of the Globe audience. Purcell's I Shakespeare and the Audience in Practice i , for instance, considers how modern theatre practitioners at the Globe, as well as Shakespeare's texts, position audiences and shape their response. It is "fair to conclude that the [Globe] is suited to poetic rhythms" (48), but is it possible that Globe playwrights have been influenced by their contemporaries, or, even more interestingly, that the Globe has come to shape contemporary dramaturgical trends?.
