- Abstract
The article is a conversation between Dr. Lisa Cooper, founder and director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity and Urban Health Institute, and Dr. Sara Johnson, chairperson of the 34th Art & Science of Health Promotion Conference. They discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health care access and the role of employers in promoting health equity. Dr. Cooper emphasizes the importance of employers caring about health equity for the well-being of their employees and communities. She suggests that employers can modify their health plans and benefits to address health disparities by providing access to preventive services, gym memberships, and benefits that reduce cost sharing. They also discuss other social determinants of health, such as housing, transportation, and access to healthy food, and how they contribute to health disparities. Dr. Cooper highlights the importance of inclusive and straightforward language in health benefits and the role of community health workers in promoting health equity. She emphasizes the need for participatory design and engagement with communities in developing solutions and interventions at the organizational or individual level.
