- Abstract
The article discusses the assimilation of Spanish and Italian immigrants to Uruguay in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The high rate of European immigration to Uruguay, especially in the capital city of Montevideo, is discussed, as is the scarcity of reliable census and immigration statistics. Data from Montevideo marriage records are examined to determine what regions of Spain and Italy immigrants came from, and aspects of both assimilation and cultural pluralism in Uruguay are discussed.
