- Abstract
The empirical evidence for the dual diagnosis of conduct disorder and depression in adolescents has been present for several years. Within that time frame, the prominence of this comorbid diagnosis in adolescents has steadily increased. The studies reviewed indicate that these adolescents are at extreme risk for school failure, peer rejection, violent behavior, drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, adult psychiatric illness, and serious criminality. Yet, despite the studies done, there is still an obvious omission of intervention outcome research to direct practitioners who work with these adolescents on a daily basis. This review examines the current empirical research on this comorbid condition and the intervention outcome research on adolescent conduct disorder and adolescent depression separately. A model for a treatment technology for comorbid adolescents, utilizing the current, most effective interventions targeting five foci is suggested.
