- Abstract
The current society evolves towards healthier lifestyles attaching an increasing importance to nutrition, health and, in general, welfare. This involves the search for balanced diets and, therefore, eating food according with personal nutritional needs. The European Commission besides food companies, consumers and governments have re-examined the type of nutrition information on food labels. It is important that the provided nutrition information be appropriate and understandable for consumers because that information will affect food choices and behaviors. In this framework, we propose a reflection on two areas of particular importance, not only nationally, but also in the European Community. On one hand, the food industry challenges in order to incorporate the new requirements in nutrition and health for labeling and foods advertising. On the other hand, the impact that the regulatory progress, the labeling and advertising produce in the consumers behavior and purchase decision of healthiest foods.
