- Abstract
A significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and childhood obesity has been shown in the last three decades and it is estimated that worldwide about 170 million people under 18 years are overweight. In this sense, studies have raised the hypothesis that breastfeeding can be used as a strategy in the prevention of childhood obesity and associated pathologies. This study aimed to identify the association between duration of exclusive breastfeeding and a possible protection in the development of overweight and obesity in preschool children. Work cross-sectional nature, in which 48 children from two to five years of a private educational institution located in the municipality of Itabaiana / SE, were evaluated for weight and height. The children's parents completed a questionnaire about feeding time. Children were categorized as exclusively breastfed and non-breastfed exclusively, and subsequently these data were related to nutritional status. Of the 48 children studied, 6.2% had never been breastfed and 93.8% received breast milk. Among children who were exclusively breastfed, there has been a prevalence of normal weight (80%) at the expense of overweight (20%). It was concluded that there was a significant association between duration of exclusive breastfeeding and the prevention of overweight and obesity in preschool children, agreeing with the literature data.
