- Abstract
The aim of this research was to evaluate how much involved the citizens of Alexandroupolis are with the community sport programs and whether gender, age and frequency of participation affect this involvement. The sample consisted of 202 participants of the community sport programs (mostly women, 65.8%). The evaluation of involvement was examined through the Modified Involvement Scale (MIS) of Kyle, Absher, Norman, Hammitt and Jodice (2007). For the confirmation of the scale's structural validity a series of factor analyses were carried out, which revealed three involvement factors: "attractiveness", "self-expression" and "social bonding". The research's results showed statistically significant differences: a) in the case of the factor «social bonding» (t = -2,731, p<.01), with women (?=4,34, S.D.=1,31) more positively evaluating this factor than men (M=3,74, SD=1.06), b) in the evaluation of the factors «attractiveness» (F(3,197) = 2,84, p<.05) and "self-expression" (F(3,197)=2,84 p<.05), with no statistically important differences between the different age groups and c) in the case of the factors "attractiveness" (F(2,181)=10.17, p<.01) and "social bonding" (F(2,191)=4.02, p<.05), with significant variations among the non-regular participants and the regular ones. It is important for the Municipalities to offer interesting and qualitative sports programs as the enhancement of the citizens' engagement with the sports programs will lead to their satisfaction and probably to the increase of their loyalty and frequency of participation.
