- Abstract
It is a common belief among historians that marriage was the ideal and desirable form of life in the early modern period, satisfying central needs both in terms of work and lifestyle. This article advances new approaches in the history of family concepts, by using the example of German universities. It shows the diverse functions of bachelorhood, family and household and their historical specifics in various contexts. Whereas marriage was an ideal in the post-reformation period, life as a single – or rather the ‘life plan’ of bachelorhood – later stood for various images of progress and thus had a broad effect on society.
