- Abstract
The article presents a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the occurrence of non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections in Connecticut clinical laboratories. STEC infections cause diarrhea, often bloody, that can lead to potentially life-threatening hemolytic uremic syndrome. The Connecticut Department of Public Health assessed trends in Shiga toxin enzyme immunoassay testing by local clinical laboratories by analyzing results of confirmatory testing in the state laboratory.
