- Abstract
This essay shows the association of Asklepios with his divine daughter, Hygieia, who is considered the personification of health in Graeco-Roman Asklepieion medicine. It discusses the roles of Hygieia in the healing arts of antiquity, religion and hygienic living within the cult of Asklepios based on archaeological and literary evidence and insights from historians, classicists and archaeologists. Also explored are the various votive reliefs and statues in which Hygieia is portrayed.
