- Abstract
Tracheotomy is a surgical procedure to create a hole in the trachea and can be performed in the operating room or intensive care unit. She is currently indicated for patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation, upper airway obstruction caused by trauma, burns, epiglottitis or tumor. The role of nursing in the perioperative process and in the care of a tracheostomy allows a better quality of life to the tracheostomy. Guidelines for home care when necessary includes vacuuming, cleaning the inner cannula and the stoma, tracheostomy change the lace, providing a means of communication when the patient takes the vocal cords and more. The objective of this research is to develop a protocol guidelines to family / caregiver of the patient with tracheostomy aiming at reducing the recurrence of hospitalization due to lack of knowledge of them. This research was conducted through literature study with exploratory reading, analysis and selection of texts and papers, and they searched in libraries, books, articles and online databases. Guide the care for family members / caregivers is extremely important for the caregiver to feel confident about the maintenance / care of the stoma allowing the customer to become independent resuming their activities taking into account their limitations.
