- Abstract
Curriculum is regarded as an effective means of fortifying gender concepts. This paper studies five English textbooks published by OUP, namely 'Oxford Reading Circle' for grade I to V, produced for Pakistani children from the perspective of gender representation that is how male and female images are displayed in them. The study specifically aims to view gender portrayal in terms of titles, pictures, characters, leading roles, occupations and activities in the selected material For this purpose, content analysis method is used Data is collected and arranged using quantitative approach and is also studied qualitatively. The results reveal quite clearly that male gender is represented as superior to the female gender, which is highly biased and discriminatory in all areas analyzed. In the light of these findings, the study proposes that textbooks for children should be reviewed and revised for gender images with a view to attain gender equality in education as stipulated in the National Plan of Action 2001-2015 and Pakistan Education Sector Reforms 2001-2005.
