- Abstract
The following paragraphs summarise the evolution of toxicology especially from 19708 till date. It showed impressive growth from descriptive toxicology to molecular toxicology and to omic toxicology embracing various concepts of cell death viz: apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy, mitophagy, membrane fluidity, oxido-reductive stress, free radical biology, redox biology and intracellular calcium homeostasis. Global gene expression profiling further helped in understanding the molecular mechanisms of toxicity of a xenobiotic. It was a challenging task for us to keep pace with these developments. However, we continued to unravel the cellular responses to chemical stress employing conventional methods of histopathology, histochemistry to modern methods of molecular biology and gene expression profiling. We practiced the concept of biomarkers and molecular markers using in vivo studies. Today, experimental toxicologist has many options to perform his investigations, however, there seems to be a compelling need to develop quality in vivo data for ever increasing number of drugs/chemicals. Recent efforts like NTP and TOX-21 made by international organizations to safeguard human, animal and environmental health from adverse effects of numberless poisons are welcome. May be the following paragraphs inspire toxicologists around the globe to continue their efforts to create a healthier world by practicing the science of toxicology.
