- Abstract
Africans are religious (Mbiti, 1967). Religion is part of the cultural heritage of the African people. This explains why the Yorubas are deeply religious and why some of the major World Religions such as Islam and Christianity have tapped the root in Yorubaland. Likewise, many of the Independent Churches grow easily and spread rapidly. The Yorubas have a land for any religion. The unlimited rapid growth of the Independent Churches was facilitated significantly by the mainline churches'rigid dogma, spiritual practice, monogamy, and cultural disregard. Most importantly, the New Religious Movements, also known as the Independent Churches, resent the religious discrimination against women. Culturally and Theologically, the Independent Churches, disagreed in principle and in practice with the mainline churches' disempowerment of women and lack of appreciating the dignity of women. The practice of picking and choosing from the cultural elements by mainline churches made many of the Yorubas disoriented, both culturally and religiously. The African belief in the universality of God, quickly empowered some Africans, particularly the Yorubas, to launch their own religious movements where they enjoy religious freedom and authority to express their religious beliefs spiritually, prayerfully, and theologically. This paper examines the historical background of the Independent Churches and their Theology of Marriage, female spirituality, and leadership. This paper explores the Independent Churches; particularly the Aladura-Churches that have registered their presence and appreciable successes in Yorubaland. They have come to stay.
