- Title
'A Fenian pastime'? Early Irish board games and their identification with chess.
- Authors
HARDING, TIMOTHY
- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the historical connections between the game of chess and Irish nationalism. Details are given identifying the 19th-century historiographical fallacy that attributed the origins and development of the board game to that of Irish culture. Discussion is provided identifying both the sources and motivations behind the historical claim, likening it to the country's turn-of-the-century nationalistic movement, and corrections to the historical record regarding strategic board games in Ireland.
