- Abstract
The brain bank, by collecting posmortem tissue and cerebral-spinal flowing from patients who suffered from neurological and psychiatric disorders, allows the establishment of groups of researchers in the field. The organization of the brain bank has become an important link between the donor, caregiver, clinician, neuropathologist and the basic scientist by supplying clinically and neuropathological well documented specimens for research. Each area dissected from the brain a diseased patient, needs to be matched with an identical area from a control patient. The pos mortem factors which should be taken into account are: pos mortem delay, fixation, transport, and storage time. This article includes some guidelines and protocols for sampling, dissection, tissue preparation and some selected techniques for the accurate neuropathological diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Also, we include some information for the basic handling of brain tissue from patients which were affected by prions diseases, such as Creutzfeld-Jakobd disease.
