- Authors
SITTON, TOM
- Abstract
The article discusses how the ownership of Santa Catalina Island, California from the years 1892 to 1919 by William, Joseph, and Hancock Banning reflect traditional values, the changes that occurred in the state and in the U.S. during the Progressive Era and the contrast to the modern era that followed. The emergence of seaside resorts during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a popular vacation destination is noted. The Banning's publicity campaign for the island, their business of transporting and entertaining visitors, and the Bannings' policies on saloons, serving alcohol, and their competition with the Avalon, California's Pilgrim Club are discussed.
