- Authors
Zhukov, Yuri M.
- Abstract
The article explores the logic of balancing and bandwagoning in civil war using an epidemic model of popular support dynamics. It says that civilians are better off balancing when civilian strategy is communicated to combatants, and punishment can be avoided only when civilian strategy is readily observable. It stresses that violence in civil war can occur in equilibrium, inflicting great costs on civilian.
