- Title
Patients with worsening chronic heart failure who present to a hospital emergency department require hospital care.
- Abstract
The article presents information on a study which tries to characterize patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) presented to a hospital emergency department (ED) because of worsening symptoms. It also tries to determine the reasons why they are admitted to hospital. CHF, a major public health problem, is associated with progressive deterioration, disabling symptoms and frequent hospital admissions. The results say that only 2% of the patients could be sent home after acute treatment in the ED, and the reasons for hospital admissions included pneumonia/respiratory disease, myocardial infarction, pulmonary oedema, anaemia, the need to monitor cardiac rhythm and pathological blood chemistry.
