- Abstract
The circle of pagan Roman senators around Quintus Aurelius Symmachus was traditionally seen as the intended audience of Ammianus' historical work. The weakness of the evidence on which this view was based was noted by Alan Cameron and others. Since then, many scholars have argued, that the imperial bureaucratic elite was the addressee of the Res Gestae. All work on this issue has used a similar approach: scholars try to find in Ammianus' work clues that allow them to identify his audience. This study reaches a different conclusion using materials that have not yet been properly exploited, the information of other sources that tell us about the composition of the literary public and the circulation of books in the fourth century.
