- Authors
Zymaris, Philip
- Abstract
The article analyzes practices on tonsure, monasticism, and the episcopate in East and West, and discusses its significance on today's practice. In "The Photian Schism: History and Legend," by Francis Dvornik, it shows Photios, a layman, professor and protospatharios (secretary of state) of imperial court, being ordained athroon, from lay state to episcopal rank in days, which the author notes as not to place Photios in a monastery, but instead on the patriarchal throne.
