- Abstract
The article discusses the way concerning the alternative uses for crude glycerin in the U.S. In 2006, it is stated that 250 million gallons of biodiesel has been produced leaving five to ten gallons of glycerin left behind. According to Katherine Taconi, a chemical engineering professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, glycerin can be reused through bioprocessing. She denotes that glycerin can be converted to bioplastics, organic soil treatments, laboratory reagents and biofuel through fermentation reactions. However, issues about the environmental impact for biofuel production is tackled.
