In biomarkers we trust?

- Abstract
The article presents information on the latest technologies in the field of bio-marker.s Though the term biomarker historically refers to analytes in biological samples, any measurement that predicts a person's disease state or response to a drug can be called a biomarker (Box 1). Biomarkers have evolved over time from simple single physiological (blood pressure and heart rate), or laboratory (cholesterol) parameters to highly complex imaging modalities or multi-marker genomic/proteomic panels. Interest in biomarkers of all sorts has skyrocketed recently as hopes for immediate biomedical applications of the Human Genome Project have been tempered by the high failure rates of drug candidates aimed at novel targets.
