- Abstract
The present study was conducted on 78 clinical cases of ruminant species of either sex and different age groups. The prevalence of congenital affections in ruminants was highest in sheep 12.5% (2/16), followed by cattle 4.5% (60/1332), buffalo 3.8% (7/180), and least in goats 1.15% (9/800). The sex wise occurrence of congenital surgical affections was recorded higher in male ruminants (50/78, 64.10%) than in female (28/78, 35.9%). Out of 78 congenital affections, highest occurrence was recorded in cattle, (60/78, 76.93%), followed by goats (9/78, 11.54%), buffalo (7/78, 8.97%) and least in sheep (02/78, 2.56%). The age wise occurrence of congenital surgical affections were recorded highest (57/78, 73.08%) in ruminants of 0-1 months age group followed by (20/78, 25.64%) 1-3 months age group and least (1/78, 1.28%) was recorded in > 3 months age group. Based on the system affected the congenital affections of gastro-intestinal system was recorded highest (29/78, 37.18%), followed body cavity/hernia (23/78, 29.49%), uro-genital system (9/78, 11.55%), skeletal system (7/78, 8.97%) and special sense organs (4/78, 5.13%). However, the incidence of muscular system, nervous system and integumentary system was recorded in 2/78 cases 2.56%) each. In the present study 19 different type of congenital surgical affections were recorded in ruminants of which highest occurrence of atresia ani, that was followed by umbilical hernia, intestinal evisceration, dermoid, persistent urachus, hypospadias, urethral diverticulum, atresia ani with recto vaginal fistula, epitheliogenesis imperfecta, muscular weakness and congenital deformity, hydrocephalus and some of the rare cases encountered were unusal growth at tongue, atresia vulvi, angular limb deformity, brachygnathism/parrot mouth, arthrogryphosis with torticolis, cleft palate and schistosomus reflexus. The surgico-therapeutic treatments of congenital affections were attempted and the outcome of the treatment was satisfactory in most cases.
