- Authors
RUSSELL, DON
- Abstract
The article discusses American soldier and Western showman William F. Cody, popularly known as Buffalo Bill, focusing particularly on his 1876 fight with Cheyenne Indian Chief Yellow Hand, sometimes referred to as the duel on the War Bonnet, part of the Battle of Warbonnet Creek. The author considers the Sioux War of 1876, the defeat of the U.S. Army 7th Cavalry under the leadership of General George A. Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and Cody's position as a scout with the U.S. 5th Cavalry Regiment in 1876. The author also discusses how the duel was presented by Cody in his Wild West show and how it was portrayed in popular print culture such as dime novels.
