- Abstract
Introduction: Tracheostomy is an opening made surgically through the neck into the trachea. It provides an air passage to bypass an obstructed or impaired airway. Post tracheostomy haemorrhage is one of the commonest complications. Objective: To establish relationship between the various factors that may contribute to haemorrhage after the procedure especially its association with abnormal PT/APTT (Prothrombin Time/Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time). Materials and Methods: The electronic medical records among 833 patients underwent tracheostomy in Selayang Hospital from 2000 to 2013 were reviewed. Results: The overall rate of post tracheostomy haemorrhage in association with abnormal PT/APTT is 7%. Out of 43 cases of post tracheostomy haemorrhage, 70% were done by medical officers and 63% of the cases were completed in less than 30 minutes. Conclusion: Abnormal coagulation profile was shown to be insignificant but surgeon's experience is a determinant in causing post tracheostomy haemorrhage.
